These Croque Monsieur-inspired croissants feature flaky pastry filled with savory ham, onion chutney, and rich cheese sauce, baked to golden perfection. Perfect for a special breakfast or brunch.

About this recipe

Ingredients

  • 6 croissants
  • 12 slices of ham (I used Brunswick Ham)
  • 6-8 tsp onion chutney

Cheese Sauce

  • 30g butter
  • 1 tbsp + 1 tsp plain flour
  • 325ml milk

Cheese Sauce

  • 1.07 oz butter
  • 1 tbsp + 1 tsp plain flour
  • 11 oz milk

Instructions

Prepare the Cheese Sauce:

  1. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  2. Once melted, add the flour and whisk continuously to form a smooth paste (this is called a roux).
  3. Gradually add 1/3 of the milk at a time, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Cook until the sauce thickens and can coat the back of a spoon.
  4. Add the grated cheese to the sauce and stir until fully melted and smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat and set aside.

Assemble the Croissants:

  1. Preheat your oven to 190°C
  2. Slice each croissant in half horizontally.
  3. Spread 1-2 teaspoons of onion chutney on the bottom half of each croissant.
  4. Place 2 slices of ham on top of the chutney.
  5. Spoon a generous amount of the cheese sauce over the ham and a sprinkle of cheese.
  6. Place the top half of the croissant on top.

Bake:

  1. Place the assembled croissants on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  2. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes, or until the croissants are golden and the cheese sauce is bubbly and slightly browned.
  3. Remove from the oven and let them cool for a couple of minutes before serving. Enjoy your Croque Monsieur-inspired croissants warm!
